Invisalign straightens teeth with a series of clear, removable aligners rather than fixed brackets and wires. Each set moves the teeth slightly, and you work through them over months until the teeth are where they should be.
The appeal is mostly that nobody can see them, and that you take them out to eat and to brush — which means no food restrictions and much easier cleaning than with fixed braces. Appointments are also less frequent.
The catch is that it only works if you wear them, generally twenty to twenty-two hours a day. Aligners left in a drawer do nothing, and treatment stretches out accordingly. It suits people who will commit to that; for some bite problems, conventional braces are still the better tool, and we will say so.

A good share of the people who start treatment here are in their forties, fifties and sixties. Some had braces as teenagers, stopped wearing the retainer at nineteen and watched the front teeth slowly crowd back over the next thirty years. Some never had the chance the first time round.
Age is not a limiting factor for moving teeth; the health of the gum and bone holding them is. That is checked before anything is planned, and it is the reason treatment begins with an examination and X-rays rather than an impression kit.
Trays work while they are in your mouth and do nothing whatsoever in a pocket. Twenty-two hours a day is the number: out for meals, out for anything other than water, brushed and back in.
Patients who hold to that finish roughly when the plan said they would, often inside six to eighteen months, changing trays every week or two and dropping in every couple of months so we can confirm the teeth are where the plan expects. Patients who treat it loosely end up needing extra refinement trays, which adds months. It is genuinely the one variable you control.

Nightly wear indefinitely is the realistic expectation, and a retainer is a small thing to look after compared with paying for the same movement twice. Keep the trays clean while you are in treatment too — rinse them each time they come out and brush them properly, because a tray worn over unbrushed teeth holds sugar against the enamel for twenty-two hours a day.
