The problems we see most are a tooth that has broken or been knocked out, a filling or crown that has come loose, swelling around a tooth, and pain that has gone from occasional to constant. Swelling in particular should not wait — an infection that spreads is a far bigger problem than the tooth that started it.
A knocked-out adult tooth can sometimes be saved if you act fast. Handle it by the crown rather than the root, keep it in milk or in your cheek, and get to us straight away. Time matters more than anything else you do.

What moves the number:
Most of what comes through the door on these visits is a tooth that can still be saved, very often with root canal treatment rather than an extraction. The sooner we look at it, the likelier that is.
Nobody should spend a weekend debating with themselves whether a throbbing tooth is serious enough to bother a dentist about. We would far rather tell you it can safely wait until Tuesday.

An adult tooth that has been knocked out can often be saved if the next hour is handled well. Hold it by the crown and never by the root. Rinse it briefly in milk or saline if it is dirty — not tap water, and do not scrub the root surface. Then either ease it back into its socket and bite gently on a clean cloth, or carry it here in a cup of milk. Letting it dry out in a tissue is the thing that ruins its chances.
For swelling, a cold pack against the outside of the cheek, twenty minutes on and twenty off. For pain, ibuprofen generally outperforms paracetamol on dental problems because the underlying trouble is inflammation — take it with food and stay within the packet's dosage. Do not rest an aspirin on the gum; it burns the tissue and leaves the tooth exactly as it was.
A broken tooth with a sharp edge can be covered with a scrap of sugar-free chewing gum or orthodontic wax until you get here.
We are open Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm and Saturday 8am to 2pm, which catches a fair number of the emergencies that surface over a weekend. Saturday slots go quickly, so ring early rather than at lunchtime.
Outside those hours, leave us a message and we will pick it up when we open. If your face is swelling, you are struggling to swallow or breathe, the bleeding will not stop, or you have had a serious facial injury, do not wait for us — call 911 or go straight to the nearest emergency room. That is the one situation where the hospital is the right call.
Pain you cannot manage, swelling, bleeding that will not stop, a broken or knocked-out tooth, or a lost filling or crown that has left a sharp edge.
