Oral health and head/neck cancer screenings as part of your regular visit. Early detection makes all the difference.
We screen for oral and head and neck cancer as part of your regular visit. It takes a couple of minutes and does not cost extra — we look over the tongue, the floor and roof of the mouth, the cheeks and throat, and feel along the jaw and neck for anything that has changed.
Oral cancer is far more treatable when it is found early, and early is exactly when it tends to be painless and easy to ignore. A sore that has not healed in two weeks, a red or white patch, a lump, a rough spot, or trouble swallowing are all worth showing us.
If we see something we are unsure about, we say so plainly and refer you on for a proper opinion. Most of what we find turns out to be harmless, and the point of looking is that you do not have to guess.
No. It is part of your regular examination here.
Tobacco and heavy alcohol use raise the risk substantially, and HPV is now a significant factor too. But it does occur in people with none of those, which is why we screen everyone.
We explain what we have seen and refer you to a specialist for a definitive answer. We will not leave you to work it out yourself.
